CRME is one of the permanent research institutes of Indian Council of Medical Research working with insect vectors and vector borne diseases

CRME is having four divisions; such as
(i) Vector Surveillance and Insectary
(ii) Molecular Biology and Diagnosis
(iii) Insect-Microbe Interaction.

Each division is headed by the senior-most scientists of the division. Each division is well equipped with modern equipment.  For example, the Genomic Epidemiology division is equipped with required equipment (for example, PCR, RT-PCR, Deep freezer, high speed centrifuges etc.) to carry out genomic studies. Similarly, the Vector Surveillance and Insectary division facilitated with insectary/ mosquito colony which maintains all the species of major mosquito vectors such as Culex, Aedes, Anopheles and a non-vector species of Toxorhynchites splendens. This lab is capable of doing sequential colonization of mosquitoes collected from the field. This lab is equipped with facilities for blood feeding, air-conditioned separate rooms for rearing larvae and adult. The Molecular Biology and Diagnosis division is endowed with latest equipments such as PCR, HPLC, equipment for protein separation, inverted microscope, CO2 incubator, deep freezers, Lyophilizer, facility for tissue culture, sequencing of DNA, RNA, PCR and ELISA based diagnosis of arboviruses both from mosquito and human samples. The Insect-Microbe Interaction division is mainly concentrating on studying the dynamics of vector mosquito biology and survival ability and role of microbes in the successful survival. Also this division is expanding its activity in devising novel vector control approaches and developed several techniques which facilitate the understating of mosquito-microbe interaction. This division is equipped with modern florescence microscope for viewing Toxo-IFA and basic facilities such as autoclave, incubator, spectrophotometer, shaker etc.

CRME is equipped with nearly 30 computers with 24hrs internet connection to facilitate the scientific activities of the institute. Most of the computers are connected with printer and scanner for handling various research documents. CRME has its own dynamic website apart from the details provided by ICMR in their website.

The overall head of the institute is the Director appointed by the DG, ICMR. However, the Administrative Officer (AO) executes the orders on behalf of the Director. There are two Section Officers (SO) coming under the AO and each SO is provided with one or two Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and or Upper Division Clerk (UDC). There are different sections are there viz. Establishment, Accounts and Stores.

Insectary and Mosquito colony

Cyclic colonies of major vector species such as Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Anopheles stephensi, Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Toxorhynchites splendens are regularly maintained at CRME. The colony acts like biological sample source of vector mosquitoes and provides to researchers and candidates on demand.

The library is housing approximately 2110 volumes of books and bound volumes of journals. Many reputed national and international journals in the field of vectors and vector borne diseases are subscribed regularly.

CRME has a mosquito museum in its campus. The museum houses a total of 91,600 vouched mosquito specimens belongs to 242 species (60% of total mosquito fauna of India), 39 genera and 34 sub genera. The vouched specimens acts as reference source for the researchers of not only CRME but from different Universities across the country.

Human Resource Development
CRME is recognized by the Madurai Kamaraj University for registering Ph.D. research works under the guidance of scientists of the centre. CRME also regularly accommodate students of UG, PG and M. Phil., degrees for training, dissertation works.  Also, over the years, CRME has been a nodal agency for training medical entomologists in the southern states of India.

Student Hostel
CRME is having hostel facility for the accommodation of female candidates who are coming from places other than Madurai for their Ph.D., UG and PG degree dissertation research or training works under CRME.
