The Centre for Research in Medical Entomology (CRME) was established in May 1985 at Madurai (Tamil Nadu), as one of the permanent Centres of the Indian Council of Medical Research with a mandate to perform field and laboratory based research on all vector borne diseases with special emphasis to medical entomological research.
CRME was established at a time when major parts of Tamil Nadu were reeling under the clouds of Japanese encephalitis (JE) with recurrent outbreaks. Therefore, the immediate challenge before CRME was not only to tackle the outbreak situations but also to conduct long term research works to understand the disease epidemiology in detail and prevent such future outbreaks.
CRME had since then, taken up various research projects on JE, dengue, chikungunya, lymphatic filariasis (LF) and contributed significantly in understanding disease epidemiology, and role of different vectors in disease transmission etc.
